What they were dealing with
Every BI implementation starts with the same question: can we trust the data? For clients with multiple source systems, the answer was often 'not yet.' Products arrived with different naming conventions across systems. Locations were missing geocoordinates needed for regional analysis. Employees appeared under different IDs in HR and payroll. Payment types didn't map cleanly between POS and finance. The early approach was to solve this in the pipeline - hardcoded transformations that worked until the source data changed, which it always did. Moving to Excel lookup tables helped, but introduced its own fragility. Clients couldn't maintain them confidently, and any update still required intervention from the data team.
